Evaluation

I asked my students to fill out teacher evaluations for my portfolio. One of the questions asked if they thought I had high expectations for them. Here's a response I'm definitely keeping for the portfolio:

"Maybe, and maybe not; maybe he just wants to keep his job, or maybe he actually does like us."

I'll take it!

Random Cliff Milton quote

(The word "random" is entirely superfluous.)

Cliff hangs out with me before school every other day. One time a student--whom many would deem a nerd--walked by, and Cliff offered his assessment.

Cliff: "That's a Weird Al Yankovic in the process."

Dear Mr. Vonn

I got one Christmas card from a student this year. (You can't take offense to something like this, though; it's another thing that goes with the territory when most of your students are not affluent.) Anyway, it really only took the one card to make me happy.

"Dear Mr. Vonn

Thanks for brighting up my day with jokes."

Tryin' to teach

A student and his friend survey the hallway after school.

Student A [anonymous]: "Man there are so many teachers out there today."

Student B [Terry Drew]: "I know! I felt like I was in school today. Usually it feels like... a prison. Teachers started tryin' to teach today."

Oy.

Il Duce

There was some downtime during an extended 3rd Period the other day. The students began talking about who I looked like. For connoisseurs of Vonn comparisons, of course, this was an enticing prospect. So here's an updated list:

- "Ken Barbie" (I would say a Ken doll, but it was actually said "Ken Barbie," like someone's name--Joe Smith, Frank Stevens, Ken Barbie. You get the idea.)
- The Mask (thanks, kids)
- Buzz Lightyear
- Crispin Glover

Before a pep assembly in homeroom class, I mentioned these new doppelgangers. My homeroom kids were quick to offer their take:

- Shaggy from Scooby Doo (OK, not a new one, but reiterated)
- Tom Cruise
- Orlando Bloom (followed quickly by a "No he don't look like Orlando Bloom!")

And then, maybe one of the best moments of my teaching career:

Student: "No, you know who you look like Mr. Vonn? You look like Benito Mussolini!"

IL DUCE?
