As a teacher, I love both the question and the conclusion of the following.
Student [Billy]: "So is Brutus a bad guy?"
Me: "That's a great question! Is he? He's trying to help Rome, but at the same time he is backstabbing his best friend."
Billy: "So he's kind of like a middletagonist."

I'm pretty sure my English professors in college never coined such an appropriate term, they just droned on about relativism and moral ambivalence. Nope -- middletagonist.
